Given that you have the time and the necessary tools and materials, who says you can not learn how to build your a guitar and actually build one for yourself? We all usually think that such items are manufactured only by big companies and there is no how anyone can build a guitar on his own. You will have to eat your words if you are party to this thinking because many people are now actually building their own guitars. One of the good things about building or making your own guitar is that you will have the opportunity of including in it enhancements and features that you would love to have in your guitar which may all not be available in a guitar you buy at your local store.

Learning how to make a guitar for yourself could be an excellent idea for you if you are musically inclined to doing-it-yourself phenomenon. A custom built guitar will cost you far less than buying one off the shelves at your local store. With tools and some precision, you can build your guitar although if you are just learning how to handle such big projects, you are better advised to be mindful of the tools you will be using as they are sharp instruments that may cause severe injuries if not properly handled. For starters, you need to know the kind of materials that would be required of you in this project.

If you are well acquainted with the type of materials that will be needed for the project, you may then go ahead with the purchase of these materials. Your local store should be the first place for you to check and you can as well check on the internet for stores that sell guitar spare parts. I would be lying if I told you that the guitar making process is going to be a smooth and easy one. You may then find a guide or good book handy in your quest to learn how to make a guitar or go to your local library for instructional materials that can help you out with suggestions and tips. When your tools are bought, you should have them arranged in order. Part of the tools you will need include a drill, saws, jointer, chisel, a file, rasp and some more. If you don’t have a workshop that is functional before, you may have to pay a visit to your hardware store so as to get all the necessary equipments. One other thing you need to have just before you start making your guitar is ample space. A spacious workplace is necessary where you can keep your materials and equipments especially where you have children running around the house.

For the design of anything to come off with great aesthetics, it has to be conceptualized first. You should decide on the type of design you want for your guitar. There would be many factors for you to consider at this stage and this will include the body contour of the guitar you want to build. If you are already a guitarist and can really twine the strings like I expect you should, the design you choose should be a perfect fit for your playing style. The design also has to do with any of the neck types which include fixed, thru-neck or bolt-on which you may choose for your guitar.

Once your ideas are conceptualized, you would be better off if you can transform these ideas into a laudable and feasible plan and for this purpose, you can draw vector diagrams. If you can give accurate drawings of the components of your guitar which include the pick guard, body shape, switches, pick-ups, potmeters, bridge and cable connector, so much the better as you will be able to have at least a paper guitar which takes you closer to laying your hands on the real guitar.

If you have observed closely enough, the quality of sound produced by a guitar does not stop with the string alone but has do with the type of wood used. You should carefully choose the kind of wood that you want to use for your guitar if you want to produce the kind of tunes you want. Learning how to make a guitar involves learning on the type of wood to use. Brazilian, Honduras or Spruce mahogany are woods of musical grade and class and would get you a good guitar made. Woods like birch veneer and gumwood are not going to get you a good guitar and should be avoided. The reason for this is that, you are going to need a thick coat of finish to your guitar when you use such woods and this will adversely affect the quality of sound produced by the guitar.

With the design you have ready for your guitar, cut your wood and assemble the pieces together. Now make sure that you use top quality glue to put the pieces together if you don’t want your guitar falling apart during a live stage concert. Also remember to wipe off excess glue from the parts of your guitar especially if you have plans for staining your guitar. There are some little other technical details you have to contend with like routing and drilling and the finishing which will probably be the last step for you to take. With a step-by-step picture guide, you will actually find learning how to make a guitar a bit of fun for you.
