How To Make A Tie?
It is the norm in most parts of the world to expect you to have your tie on in any formal meeting or gathering. The use of ties is not limited to any sex, race, creed or age but cuts across the whole wide world. Since they are needed by all and sundry they are produced in large numbers in different styles and patterns everyday. From the very expensive and high quality ties to the moderate or low priced ties, you will most certainly bump into people that have on their ties everyday as soon as you step out of your house. Even though it serves good purposes in the lives of people, it would surprise you to know that not many people can boast of knowing how to make a tie. Making a tie is just about as simple as when you are designing any of the other articles of clothing you have seen or heard of.
You can learn how to make a tie and start doing it right away because it is in the mind. Before you begin to think of how to go about the stitches and the other intricacies involved, you have to first learn of the materials needed for you to make a tie. Probably the first tool that should be mentioned is the silk material you will need to make your tie from. You will have to go through many types there are in the market and make good selection for your tie. A pair of scissors is an indispensable tool you must have by your side. There is so much difference between what you can achieve using a dull pair or a sharp pair of scissors. The latter is of course preferable if you want to make anything pretty from your effort. You will also need to have silk pins as well as silk needles. Thin and sharp pins and needles are needed as these would help prevent the possibility of breaking any of the threads. You will need to have your iron so that you can press your tie into shape. Other materials you will need are interlining and necktie pattern.
If you plan to make a seven fold tie, it may be somewhat different on how to make a tie pattern you have learnt for other tie styles. You will need ample supply of silk but as much as 1.25 yards is adequate for you although with a little more, you will be able to determine how you want the pattern placed at the top and bottom. A heave silk is considered good enough for a seven fold tie and since they are usually not lined as we have in six fold ties, the silk material used should be somewhat heavier to add to the total weight. If you can get to buy a silk material that is about 25-30mm, you will have a seven fold tie made with good enough thickness. You will at this stage need to decide on the type of pattern you would want. There are several patterns and they go well with specific silk materials and in other words, you will have to be careful of your choice for a pattern if you don’t want to waste your money.
Your work on the silk material will then begin and it starts with you removing the wrinkles by spreading it on a large flat surface and ironing out the wrinkles and the folds. With your silk material ready, you can now proceed with the use of your selected seven fold pattern. You can make one for yourself or you can buy one. You need to have the pattern properly set on the silk material so that the centerline in aligned with the bias. When the tie is not cut on the bias, there is the possibility that it may not hang well and you may observe twirling when you put your tie on.
Place out the silk material for your chosen pattern with the edge of the centerline parallel with that of the silk material. If you must learn how to make a tie, double checking is an important step for you at this stage just to confirm which side of the silk will be revealed on the bottom of the tie. You should then place on the pattern a paper weight and trace out the pattern with chalk on the back of the silk.
The next step would be for you to cut the silk up into pieces using a rotary blade or a sharp pair of scissors. You should avoid stretching the silk material too much when you lift to cut it. Your sewing starts with these two pieces of silk that you have cut up and it usually starts with the bottom edges. You should fold along the dotted lines to show that the shape and the pattern are after rolling the edges. You may place the pattern on your silk to guide you through at this stage.
You need to make a crease in your silk and make two folds which you will tuck into the crease and sew up the fold using the hidden stitch method. You will need to do this for all the four sides and repeat the same process the second end of your tie. You should now stitch the two halves with a sewing machine using the usual running stitch.
Make folds for your tie using your pattern as a guide again and you can begin ironing. It is advisable for you to have piece of cloth on your tie when you are ironing and to start the ironing from the centerline. The tie needs to be folded in a manner that will allow you see all the folds when you are done sewing and the folds should be made alternate to one another.
With the aid of silk pins, you can check to see your tie is free of lumps. You should then cut out the carrier for your tie and have it sewn. The final step which may be a little technical is to have your tie sewn and closed up in a slip stitch.
When you are done with all these steps, you can try your tie on and probably you will be able to make more ties for yourself or teach others on how to make a tie.
